Our story
Atelier Gris was founded by Frédéric Barrette and Christopher McLean.
In 2014, they took top honours in a contest held by the Conseil des Arts du Québec with a piece that combined steel and music. Wanting to build on this success, they joined forces to push the limit of their ambitions, and Atelier Gris became a way to fulfill their passion for steel and for building things. It wasn’t long before their expertise caught the attention of architects and designers seeking to include this timeless, indispensable material in their creations.
Our approach
Our workshop, which is really more of a brainstorming and prototyping lab, is home to a broad range of creative talent.
It’s where we bring projects to life, as imagined by architects, designers and artists who want to use steel because of its unique and long-lasting properties.
Our team sees steel as an instrument through which the boldest ideas can take shape. We work intently every day to carry out architectural plans or production designs. Our strengths lie in our ability to adapt to each client’s unique reality, and in our curiosity for experimenting and working with new materials. Clients appreciate our ability to listen, to pinpoint the esthetic sensitivity and challenges of a given project, and to solve problems.
Our philosophy
We find grinding and welding exciting because they allow us to create steel furniture that is durable, functional and attractive, and whose quality has a positive impact on people’s lives.
The human aspect is central to everything we do, from the way we build things to how we interact with our clients—we never use an assembly-line approach. Instead, a member of our team oversees each piece from start to finish.
